“Patch the Sidewalk”

DONATE TO “PATCH THE SIDEWALK” AT THE WREN’S NEST.

Sidewalk Radio is proud to announce the launch of “Patch the Sidewalk”, a philanthropic component to our show that offers a way for all of us to get involved and help our city.  Throughout the year, Sidewalk Radio will be giving back by raising funds and repairing sidewalks in and around Atlanta’s historic communities.

“I like the idea of repairing sidewalks for many reasons” says Gene Kansas, creator and host of Sidewalk Radio. “First, in following the Broken Window Theory, when blight and vandalism are cleaned up it lifts the entire community and encourages positive behavior.  I also love the literal and metaphoric relationship between repairing a sidewalk and the idea of improving our communities through connectivity.”

The inaugural campaign will “patch the sidewalk” at The Wren’s Nest, the historic West End home of Atlanta author Joel Chandler Harris, the 19th century Atlanta writer who penned the Brer Rabbit and Uncle Remus tales.  The Wren’s Nest is one of America’s oldest house museums, and Harris the first writer to put West African and slave oral folktales into written form.  Using the character of Uncle Remus as narrator, Harris shared a rich tradition of storytelling with people around the world.  Despite the vitality of the Wren’s Nest, the house itself is in continued need of upkeep, and that includes the sidewalk itself.

“We love Gene’s idea of patching the sidewalk. Good for The Wren’s Nest, good for the neighborhood and good for every mother passing by with a stroller. Plus having a handsome sidewalk will most certainly encourage more visitors,” explains Sue Gilman, Executive Director of The Wren’s Nest.

The “Patch the Sidewalk” campaign jumps off and celebrates the West End, The Wren’s Nest, and our collective community on Saturday July 28th, starting at 11 AM.  All are invited to join for storytelling from one of the fabled “Wren’s Nest Ramblers” and enjoy delicious popsicles from King of Pops.  Join us for what will be a beautiful and fun, family friendly event supporting a great cause.
